Welcome to SifWiki

Having had various website incarnations over the years, I've found that every-time I do the inevitable re-design I ended up pruning content because I couldn't be bothered to reformat it. This Wiki will hopefully become a central repository for documentation that I create as I do various Geeky and pointless things with Linux, Home Automation, Electronics and random other subjects.Everything here is provided as-is and totally without warranty that the information is Sane, Sensible or Safe. If you're not sure about fiddling with your mains voltage appliances or compiling your kernel from scratch, the information herein is probably a bit too rough and ready for you - I tend to assume a fairly high level of knowledge and skip over various basic aspects of what I do. That said, I hope the following is of use or at least inspires someone to do something funky. Have fun.

Home Automation (HA)

  • Linux Controlled Central Heating - Basic central heating control switches seem to be over 50quid even with only basic on/off settings and very limited temperature based controlling. I decided to control mine via a cheap Linux box and some basic serial controlled relay boards.
  • Temperature Acquisition - How to get temperature data from DS1820's into your Linux machine.
  • Serial Relay Control - Controlling external relays from Linux using PHP.
  • External Sensors in Linux - Sensing the state of external inputs using a Serial IO box and PHP scripts under Linux.
  • Doorbell Monitoring - Sensing when your doorbell is rang using a Serial IO box, wireless doorbell and some PHP under Linux.

General Linux / Other

  • NTLM Authentication against Apache - Using mod_ntlm to authenticate users against Apache in a Windows 20003 Active Directory Domain
  • RRDTool Monitoring - RRDTool can monitor everything from Bandwidth to the Temperature, here's how to monitor IPTables firewall traffic using simple bash scripts rather than more complex SNMP or Perl scripts which most other tutorials show.
  • Spot a Fake SanDisk - There's a number of "Cheap" SanDisk memory cards on eBay, unfortunately many are fake, this should help you spot counterfeit Memory Cards.
  • Buffalo WHR-54GS Serial Port Conversion - I don't know how to do it, but I'm going to try, this will document my progress (or lack there-of).
  • VMWare Workstation 6 on Fedora Core 9 - Running VMWare Workstation 6 on Fedora Core 9 with its 2.6.25 kernel
